- Entrance Procedure
- Applicants must have Commanding Officers recommendation, except when superseded by the following regulations.
- If the Applicant is not a member of a unit, the Applicant's Head of Department must be the recommending officer.
- The
recommending officer MUST send their recommendation of WHY the
candidate is suitable for the OA in order for the candidate to be
considered, including examples of the cadet's work so far, not just
"Cadet Bloggins works hard."
- Applicants to be considered for entrance will be sent the OA Entrance Exam; which is marked by the Board of Instructors.
- Applicants
must pass the theoretical section of the entrance exam with a minimum
mark of 80% as well as obtain a majority pass mark from the Board of
Instructors on the rest of the Entrance Exam in order to be eligible
for entrance.
- Upon passing the Entrance
Exam, the Applicant will be awarded the rank of Officer Cadet, and
shall be notified by the Officers Academy Commanding Officer.
- Commissioning Courses
- Commissioning Courses must be used by an Officer Cadet who is looking to get commissioned.
- All candidates have the option to waive any and all duties while on Commissioning Courses.
- The pass mark for all Commissioning Courses is 70%.
- The Officer Cadet must choose three courses which they will complete the 101s in, spending exactly 2 weeks on each course.
- One of those 101 courses must be the Basic Officers Qualification.
- Upon successful completion of the three 101s, the Officer Cadet will be promoted to the rank of Midshipman (Navy) or equivalent.
- The
candidate will then be asked to choose two of the 101s he has
successfully completed, which he will then be asked to complete the
202s in. Again, they are to spend exactly 2 weeks on each course.
- Upon
successful completion of both 202s, the candidate will then be asked to
complete an essay based on commissioning. This essay will be marked as
pass or fail by the Board of Instructors which will include up to 5
officers not including the Officers Academy Commanding Officer. The
Officer Academy Commanding Officer reserves the right to overthrow any
decision made by the Board of Instructors should he feel it is
necessary. The candidate will have exactly 1 week to submit the essay.
- Those
wishing to complete a Degree in one of their courses may, upon
successful completion of the 202 Essay, move on to the 303 of one of
their Commission 202s. To achieve honours, a candidate cannot have
failed any of the courses in that section, must have passed the 202
Essay, and must have a Cumulative average of 85% in the course which
they are attempting to get a degree.
- If, at any interval, a candidate fails one of their courses, the procedure is as follows:
- On
the second attempt at a course, it will be marked out of 85% instead of
100%. Thus, the highest mark that can be achieved the second time
through a course is 85%.
- The candidate
will be required to attempt the course again right away. They will be
given 2 weeks to try to successfully complete the course a second time.
- If
the candidate successfully completes the course on the second attempt,
they will be required to wait 3 weeks before moving on to the next 101,
or next 202. If it is their last course, they will be required to wait
3 weeks before being given the subject of their essay.
- If
the candidate fails the course a second time around, they officially
drop out of the Officers Academy and must get another recommendation as
specified previously in order to take any further Officers Academy
courses.
- Degree Courses
- Degree Courses cannot be used for Commissioning Candidates.
- Candidates
wishing to take a Degree Course can do so using the guidelines set
forth in the Regular Officers Entry Plan section of this document.
- In
instances of a Double Major course, the candidate must complete the
pre-requisite course before attempting the Double Major course.
- Accelerated Commission Course
- Access
to this course is for past Officers and those who have held the post of
Operations NCO or Corps Senior NCO consecutively for 6 months.
- All applicants are to apply in the normal way as for the normal Commission Course.
- Time limits for the 101 and 202 sections of the Commssion Course shall be halved for those on the Accelerated Commission Course.
- All stipulations of the normal course still stand to these applicants apart from the time limits.
- Certification Courses
- Certification Courses may be taken at any time, at the rate of one every two months, by any personnel in the corps.
- Certifications
will be kept on record by the Officers Academy Commanding Officer, and
displayed on an Officers Academy Records page.
- It is not necessary to have an Officers Academy Degree in order to attempt a Certification Course.
- Applicants
may apply directly to the Officers Academy Commanding Officer in order
to attempt a Certification Course. It is not necessary to have a
recommendation in order to do so.
- Certification
Courses will be marked on a pass/fail basis. There will be no marks for
this course, candidates will simply be told that they pass or fail.
- Should
a candidate fail a certification, they may attempt to retake it 1 month
after they failed. If they do not pass upon their second attempt, they
cannot attempt a third time.
- Special Certification Courses
- Special
Certification Courses may be taken only upon recommendation of someone
who would be your superior should you be placed in the position these
courses certify you for. In other words, you must be recommended by a
Chief of Staff for the Commanding Officer Qualification Course, and the
Officers Academy Commanding Officer for the Officers Academy
Instructor's Course.
- Special
Certifications will be kept on record by the Officers Academy
Commanding Officer, and displayed on an Officers Academy Records page.
- Special Certifications are open only to Commissioned Officers.
- Special
Certification Courses will be marked on a pass/fail basis. There will
be no marks for this course, candidates will simply be told that they
pass or fail.
- Candidates get one chance at Special Certification Courses. If a candidate fails, they can no longer attempt to take the course.
- Officers Academy Regular Officers Entry Plan (OA ROEP)
- Any
officer who does not require Officers Academy credits for promotion but
is still interested in taking a course or courses for their own
knowledge and learning may do so under the guidelines set forth as
follows.
- The Officers Academy primarily
serves the Officer candidates who require the training for rank and
promotion. Thus, they will be accepted first. After these candidates
are accepted and courses chosen, any available spots left may (but do
not have to be) filled by Regular Officer Entry Plan entrants.
- The
times for the courses are set forth for several reasons; one being to
give proper Time In Rank to the candidates. As such, Regular Officer
Entry Plan candidates may negotiate different time standards, with the
instructor and the Officers Academy Commanding Officer, based on time
availabilities of that particular instructor.
- Regular
Officer Entry Plan candidates do not need to take the full program with
the 3 101's, 2 202's and then the 303. They may choose to focus on one
course and take it all the way through, 101 to 303.
- Any
instructor reserves the right, with proper reason, to refuse to take
any Regular Officer Entry Plan candidate. This reason must be stated to
the Officers Academy Commanding Officer before a final decision is
given.
- Any Regular Officer Entry Plan candidate is eligible to earn an Honours Degree just as any other Officers Academy Candidate.
- Should a Regular Officer Entry Plan candidate pass, they must wait at least five months before attempting another course.
- Failure
of an Regular Officer Entry Plan candidate will result in an
ineligibility to take any more Officers Academy courses for the period
of 10 months from date of failure.
- Availability
of positions open for Regular Officer Entry Plan candidates will vary
according to how many Officer candidates are enrolled at that time.
- An
officer may not start another degree before they have finished their
existing degree under the Regular Officer Entry Plan. This means that
existing Regular Officer Entry Plan work cannot be forfeited to try a
new degree before the existing one is finished. The only exception is
if they are removed from their Officers Academy course due to failure
or other reason by the Officers Academy Commanding Officer.
